"Words cannot adequately describe the joy and excitement I feel after having my vision restored by cataract surgeon, Dr. Shanbom. A simple "thank you" seems too small in comparison, to the true gratitude and thoughtfulness that lingers in my heart towards you and your eye care staff. This experience is more than a blessing to me - it is a miracle." - Clorette
Since the lens of your eye is comprised of water and protein, the lens is see through and allows light to pass through. However, as we get older, the protein in your lens can stick together and start to blur the lens. This is the beginning stage of a cataract. Once the protein starts to cloud the lens, it can make it harder and harder to see over time. Cataracts can be very small or very large depending on the amount of protein that clumps together.
Three basic types of Cataracts
The first is a Nuclear Cataract. This particular cataract can be seen while it is forming in the center (Nucleus) of the lens. The cause of this type of cataract is due to the natural aging process.
The second type of cataract is a Cortical Cataract . This type of cataract forms in the cortex of the lens and grows from the outside of the lens towards the center. It, like a Nuclear Cataract, can inhibit sight. The Cortical Cataract is common among diabetics.
The third type of common cataract is a Subcapsular Cataract. This cataract starts its growth at the back of the lens. It is common for diabetics or individuals taking high doses of steroids to develop this type of cataract.
In the average person, a cataract can develop; yet not affect your vision. This is because it is so small at first. You may notice small changes such as colors may not seem as vivid, or your vision may be a little bit blurred or cloudy. You may notice at night, headlights and glare may seem to be more intense than before.
